Ask the coach - Fit but want to lose FAT

Question

I do aerobic training and light weights in the gym and have been working out for the last 20 years - but my shape is not changing the way I want it to. I think I'm fit, but I want to lose fat. Any ideas how I can achieve better results?

Answer

Your problem lies in the type of training you are doing and the level of intensity in your workouts.  If your goal is fat loss, then aerobic training is not the method to adopt.  You should start a weights programme with short rest intervals and also adopt a sprint-style programme with relevant rests of walking.

The other point you make is that you lift light weights - if you do this you are not working hard enough.  Reduce your repetitions to 12 and if you can do 13, it is not heavy enough. The repetition dictates the weight, and using the principle of progressive overload you should challenge your body to improve every time you use weights.  And take care of your nutrition, too, -- eat protein, vegetables and good fats.
