Damien Maher

pictureDamien was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1976. From a very young age he demonstrated a keen interest in sport and fitness. He displayed a natural talent for ball sports and participated in both GAA and soccer. His dedication to both sports was rewarded with representative honours for his county in Gaelic football and his country in soccer. Damien’s love of soccer was such that he pursued it as a career. His career involved spells at Manchester United before returning to Ireland to play for such clubs as Ards FC, Drogheda United, Home Farm Everton and Shelbourne.

Given his sporting background and his huge interest in all matters pertaining to health and fitness, it was a logical progression for Damien to enter the fitness industry. The experience of playing soccer at a professional level highlighted for Damien the lack of experienced and knowledgeable trainers available to help players improve their strength and fitness and thus enhance their careers. This led Damien to begin his quest to fill that void. He joined Westwood gym in Leopardstown as a gym instructor. While working in Westwood by day, Damien completed a Higher Diploma in NeuroMuscular Therapy by night. Having completed his diploma, Damien realised that the level of knowledge he needed to excel in his chosen career was not readily available in Ireland. In order to be the best that he can be, he knew that he would need to learn from the world’s leading experts.

Damien commenced his further education with rehabilitation expert, Paul Chek. He then trained with Charles Poliquin who is recognised as the world’s most successful strength coach having coached Olympic medallists in 18 different sports and world record holders in 10 sports. Damien has completed over 20 private internships and courses with Charles Poliquin. This is a sign of Damien’s determination to succeed as Poliquin courses are held in different locations all over the world and consequently Damien has had to travel extensively to attend these courses. Damien has also pursued the Poliquin International Certification Program for strength coaches and is currently at level 3 of which there are only five such qualified coaches in Europe.

Damien has not confined his learning to one expert. He has travelled and interned with a list of experts in the fields of strength training, body building, supplementation, nutrition, functional medicine and rehabilitation in an effort to extend his knowledge. This list includes Pierre Le Roy – coach to 1984 Olympic lifting medallist Jacques Demerres, Milos Sarcev and Lou Ferrigno – former Mr Universe winners, Mike Leahy – founder of Active Release Therapy and doctor to Denver Broncos. Active Release Therapy treats soft tissue injuries and Damien is a Certified Art Provider following his internships under Mike Leahy. These are only a sample of the experts that Damien has studied under. The list is extensive as Damien believes that you should learn from those who walk the walk and he has certainly learnt from the best in the business.

Over the last few years Damien has gained vast experience and knowledge in his chosen field of strength and conditioning. Damien’s client base is large and varied ranging from students to stay at home mothers to professional athletes including Paul McShane, current Irish soccer international, Kevin Maher at Oldham Athletic, sprinters John Kelly and Brian Gregan. He provides something for everyone and he has succeeded in helping his many clients achieve their goals. The success stories on this site are testimony to Damien’s hard work and dedication to his clients.

Jan Kelly

Jan is a late convert to a career in the fitness industry. She epitomises clichés such as “it’s never too late to change” and “you are never too old to learn something new”. Jan started out as one of BFit4Life’s first clients and she has now made the transition from pupil to teacher. She has completed level 1 and 2 of the Poliquin Certification program. Jan has always had an interest in health and fitness and has kept herself fit in the past by playing hockey, first for UCD and later for Muckross Hockey club. Jan maintains her interest in hockey but now it is in a coaching capacity. She is co-founder of Mount Anville Hockey Club which provides coaching for approximately 200 children from U14 level down to U8’s.
